Wet conditions in Canada

Friday's free practice session faced a delayed start due to the wet conditions in Montreal. Due to the rain and hail, the session started on time but the pit lane was closed. It opened around 13:51 local time, with Lewis Hamilton being the first car out on track. Most drivers appeared with either wet or intermediate tyres. The majority then finished the session on soft tyres.

During the session, a red flag was called after Zhou Guanyu hit the wall. Once cleared, drivers were able to get back out on the track. In the end, Norris finished the session with a time of 1:24:435. Both Ferrari drivers followed behind. Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen finished fourth and fifth. Norris' teammate Oscar Piastri finished in sixth. Zhou Guanyu, Jack Doohan and Alexander Albon did not set a time. Jack Doohan replaced Alpine's Esteban Ocon for the session.
