With the door for Carlos Sainz finally closed at Red Bull Racing, the options for the Spaniard leaving Ferrari are limited. Audi and Williams want to sign him for 2025, with the latter team appearing to favour Sainz for the time being. For James Vowles, Williams' team principal, it comes as no surprise that a driver of Sainz's calibre is considering a move to the once-successful team at all.

According to Vowles, Williams are no longer the team they were three years ago. "By the definition of the fact that we're even talking to Carlos shows you that we've changed our approach," the Briton told Sky Sports. "We want two world-class drivers to be a part of our stable going forward. We want the world to realise that we're here and we're serious."

Williams 'attractive' to Sainz

According to Vowles, Williams are investing heavily to improve athletically. The team principal points out that by 2026 Williams will have one of the best, 'if not THE best' power unit on the grid in the car (from Mercedes, ed.) "We'll announce shortly, I hope, that there's around about 30 incredible people from other teams joining our organisation that we've been gathering across the last 12 months. The world is changing and someone like Carlos would feature very highly in that regard in terms of the grand picture of where we are."

Whether Sainz will actually come or opt for an adventure with Audi's factory team should become clear soon. Which team is on pole? Vowles finds that hard to say. " I think he can see all the strengths. I think it's easy for me to say, because I'm Williams and I wear the shirt, but I think it's an easy decision to come here. But it has to be his to make."
