Marko confident in Max Verstappen for Canadian Grand Prix

Qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix ended with Max Verstappen narrowly on P2 and Sergio Perez on P16, the Mexican not advancing beyond Q1. The reigning Formula One world champion will start on the front row of the grid behind George Russell. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko sees that overtaking will be difficult at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, but is confident in the Dutchman's strengths, he told Sky Sports Germany.

Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz did not make it into Q3, finishing 11th and 12th. Marko definitely did not expect that. On Sunday's race, Marko says: "Well, first of all, we are surprised that Ferrari was actually not competitive. And in the race, the Mercedes are faster than us on the straights in all measurements. Two to three kph. That means overtaking is possible, but not that easy. But I hope that over the race distance, our tyre wear will perhaps be a little better."

Marko knows what Verstappen's strengths are

So the driver with number one on the car will start the Canadian Grand Prix from second place. Marko knows exactly what Verstappen's strengths are. "Max can also read a race really well. He knows when to attack and he knows how fast he can drive without overwhelming the tyres. So I hope that we’ll be up there at the front tomorrow."

Despite Verstappen not being able to start in the best possible starting position, the Red Bull Racing consultant is very confident of a win for the reigning world champion. "I believe that our setup is quite good for the race, even in these conditions, even if it does rain," Marko said.
