Verstappen offers advice to Russell: 'These things can happen'
After they both set the same lap time in qualifying, it was George Russell who started on pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix. Max Verstappen started behind in second. In the end, Verstappen came out on top, with Russell finishing third. The world champion then offered some words of wisdom to the Mercedes driver.
'These things can happen'
During Sunday's Grand Prix there was a three-way title fight for first place between Verstappen, Lando Norris and Russell, with Verstappen taking home the win. On Sky Sports, Verstappen was asked whether he thought Russell could have won the Grand Prix, to which he replied: "For sure, I think overall Mercedes had the fastest car, so I would also be disappointed. It is so easy to make a mistake."
After finishing third on the podium, the British driver was openly critical of his performance. The Mercedes driver had hoped to secure the first win for both himself and the team since Brazil 2022. So, the Red Bull Racing driver offered the 26-year-old some advice: "I said, mate these things can happen. We are all pushing to the limit, sometimes it works out and sometimes you make one mistake too much and it can catch you out, but that's racing," he said. "I'm sure he will learn and look back at it. We are all very young still, you have a lot to learn," Verstappen concluded.
