Mercedes and George Russell took their first Grand Prix podium of the season in Canada after Russell finished third despite qualifying on pole position. However, Mercedes have admitted to making a mistake in the aftermath on their social media.

Mercedes original tweet

This was the tweet Mercedes had posted after the race, celebrating their first Grand Prix podium of the season. However they forgot one crucial detail, they already have one piece of silverware - Lewis Hamilton's P2 plaque from the Chinese Grand Prix sprint.

Fans unhappy with the team as a result

This promoted backlash from the team's and Lewis Hamilton's fans, with a post from the Chinese Grand Prix weekend labelling Hamilton's plaque as their first trophy of the season. However, a comment on the teams Instagram post asked "So the Chinese sprint isn't a trophy?" to which the team responded with "It's a medal and a plaque you receive for the top three in the sprint."

This worsened the situation for the team, promoting further backlash as fans felt like they were casting Hamilton out and forgetting about him, as he prepares for his move to Ferrari at the end of the season.

As a result, Mercedes posted an apology on X, admitting their mistake.
