George Russell hopeful England can succeed at the Euros: 'They could win!'
Englishman George Russell believes that his home country could triumph at Euro 2024 in Germany. The European football tournament began on June 14 and the Mercedes driver has been following it closely, specifically the results of England. Russell, who took pole position at the last Formula 1 race in Canada, spoke about England's chances at the illustrious tournament on media day for the Spanish Grand Prix.
Why Russell thinks England can win
Norfolk-born George Russell said that he believes England has a good chance of winning the Euros, even though his home nation hasn't won a major football tournament since the 1966 World Cup. "I think they could win, for sure, watching the games, I think what those guys go through is incredibly tough. When you have a championship like the Euros, every single game counts. In that sport, anybody can get a victory on their best day.
"I think we've got a really great squad at the moment. I think Gareth (Southgate) is a great coach. We seem to be headed in a really great direction. So, fingers crossed for them. They go out and do what they do best." England drew 1-1 with Denmark in the group stage in their second match on Thursday evening.
Russell will also be hoping he 'can get a victory on his best day' now that Mercedes have improved their W15 with consistent updates. Russell has performed better than his teammate and copatriot Lewis Hamilton this season, out-qualifying the much more experienced Hamilton 8-1 this season so far.
