Russell sees 'no reason why Mercedes cannot be competitive' in Barcelona
After a difficult start to the season, Mercedes had a positive weekend in Canada. George Russell earned Mercedes' first pole position with setting the exact same time as Max Verstappen earlier than the Dutchman did in qualifying, and then the Briton finished in P3. The Mercedes driver now looks forward to the weekend in Spain.
"I'm feeling really good, to be honest. In a good place with myself, the car," Russell began in Barcelona. In Montreal, Russell earned Mercedes' first podium in 2024, after the German team had another challenging start to the season, as well as their aforementioned first pole position.
About Mercedes, Russell is optimistic, and wants a dry Sunday. "We're making really good steps forward at the moment. We think we have more things to come in the future races. But for this weekend, we have to wait and see. It's wet at the moment. I hope it stays dry, to be honest!"
'Red Bull have got more performance'
Russell believes Red Bull's performance will be key in deciding who will be the favourites at the Spanish Grand Prix. "I think there's no reason why we can't be competitive again. We need a way to see where Red Bull falls out. They've obviously been the dominant force for so long. And they've openly admitted that these last three races have probably been the most difficult three races they've had in a long time, but they've won two races from these three. Of course, if a team says this was a very difficult race and they still win, they've got more in their pockets."
