According to Toto Wolff, his Mercedes drivers should have been 1 and 2 after the second free practice. Yet it is not immediately a big celebration at Wolff's team. The latter states that George Russell and Lewis Hamilton were not satisfied with the car.

"I think we have taken a good step. Now we have to make sure to drive a good qualifying session tomorrow and a good race on Sunday," Wolff told ORF after the second free practice.

Why Russell was not at the front after FP2

According to the Mercedes team boss, the result of the second free practice could have been much better. However, George Russell, who finished eighth in the session, was hampered on his fast lap by Nico Hulkenberg. According to Wolff, Russell lost four to five-tenths there. He ended up falling short of that on his teammate.

However, there is no celebration mood yet in the German camp. Indeed, there is still some work to be done. "Both drivers were not completely satisfied with the car. You can see on the onboards that it (the car) goes in all directions. Understeer, oversteer. However, I think all the other drivers are also struggling with that."

Still, the fastest time in the second free practice session is another confirmation of the step forward Mercedes has made since the Monaco Grand Prix. Mercedes did not bring any updates to Spain but are starting to understand the updates that were brought before better and better. As a result, Mercedes are now seriously competing from the front.
