Russell reaction to crash between Norris and Verstappen

George Russell has admitted it was strange to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix due to the crash between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris despite the Brit previously pre-empting contact between the two front-runners.

After qualifying in third on Saturday, Russell expected a tasty battle between the two front-row starters and jokingly mentioned how he wants to take advantage of any fallout. "I think these guys always get their elbows out, so maybe this time, sit back and watch it all take place," Russell said on Saturday. Little did the Brit know, a crash between the two would actually allow him to win the race.

How Russell reacted to the crash

"My engineer said three laps before, they're fighting really hard, and we can win this. I said we need to secure P3 first, let me drive. I knew Oscar was fast behind. And then when I got into the lead, I knew it was going to be a challenging last six laps," Russell said.

"My tyres were difficult. That VSC helped marginally because my tyres were overheating. And that just allowed me to cool them down. It's a bit of a strange one to win a race like this, for sure. But as I said, it's racing. Sometimes it goes against you and I feel like we've probably missed out on one or two possibilities of victories. Montreal was one, arguably Singapore, things could have gone very slightly differently last year, and today it went for us. So it's how the cookie crumbles," Russell said.
