debate flares up over f2 champion advancing to formula 1

It was a great year for Felipe Drugovich. The Brazilian took the Formula 2 title in 2022 by a huge margin and, as a result, the doors at Formula 1 teams should fly wide open. That's the theory anyway. Practice proved a lot more recalcitrant: a reserve role at Aston Martin was all that was possible.

As last season's F2 champion, Theo Pourchaire, was likewise denied a spot in F1. No one should be surprised if the upcoming champion, too, does not have a seat in Formula 1 in '25. Former Mercedes junior Paul Aron, the current championship leader, is not even linked to an F1 Academy at all, while current numbers two (Isack Hadjar) and three (Gabriel Bortoleto) for Red Bull and McLaren, respectively, are not options (yet).

'Champion deserves a chance in Formula One'

There is a very real chance that Aron - if he manages to win the title at least - will miss out on Formula 1, following the example of Drugovich and Pourchaire. Much to the annoyance of the Eston himself, who is making a huge impression as a rookie in the step-up class to Formula 1. "I would certainly hope so because I'm doing everything right at this point. I'm leading the championship as a rookie and that's all I can really do. And this is what these junior single seater championships are for. You come, you perform, you show your results, and then I think you deserve a chance to be in Formula One," Aron told, among others, GPblog.

"I don't know how you explain it to the young kids if a driver who's a rookie and leading the championship and doing everything right is not getting a chance at Formula One. So I certainly hope that there is interest. My focus is obviously on Formula 2 because we're doing a good season. I would never let that go."

Interest for Aron from Formula E

There is some interest in Aron from Formula E (he drove an e-Prix as a substitute this season on behalf of Envision Racing), but the focus is on Formula 1 first. "Hopefully, the people around me are doing their best to help me out and look for opportunities. And I think that, if you're a rookie and doing a good job in Formula 2, you deserve that. And I'm not saying that because I'm up here. I'm saying that because I think that's how it should be," Aron said.
