Norris tops second free practice at British Grand Prix

McLaren top FP2 but Verstappen's pace remains a mystery at Silverstone

5 July at 16:57

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri topped the FP2 timesheets for the British Grand Prix, but Max Verstappen's pace remains a mystery due to the fact he did his soft tyre run much earlier. Sergio Perez left it later and jumped up to P3, two-tenths faster than the Dutchman's quickest time.

How the second free practice session unfolded

Ferrari were the first of the top teams to set a quick time on the medium tyres. But that time was soon toppled by Verstappen, who went six-tenths faster. Norris, Russell, Hamilton and Piastri quickly split Red Bull and Ferrari. Charles Leclerc was struggling through the Maggots/Becketts section. Leclerc confirmed he was struggling through the high-speed corners on the radio. But after 15 minutes, Ferrari jumped up towards the top of the timesheet.

A threat of rain meant Red Bull put Verstappen on the soft tyres early. He set a time of 1:27.233 on softs, around six-tenths faster than what he managed on the medium tyres. Valtteri Bottas also moved to the soft tyres early and jumped up to second-place. Aston Martin once again raised eyebrows with some good speed on the softs. Stroll moved to P2, and Alonso moved to P4.

The surprises developed more when Nico Hulkenberg went fastest briefly. Track evolution was strong, probably due to the earlier rain. Piastri was the driver to replace the Haas car at P1. Norris then went three-tenths quicker as dark clouds moved closer. Perez was later on the softs compared to his teammate, and he went around two-tenths faster. The rest of the session featured race simulations, with rain bringing it to an early end.
