With a win in Austria last week, George Russell looks to secure his third F1 win on Sunday as he starts on pole for the British Grand Prix. His teammate, Lewis Hamilton follows behind in second. With a Mercedes one-two, team boss Toto Wolff has praised the weather for helping the team secure top positions.

This weekend is the first time in Silverstone history that three British drivers make up the top three places. It is also the first time Mercedes have started one-two since 2022, when Russell won his first F1 race in Brazil, as Wolff acknowledged when speaking to F1TV. "It's been a while. We're not sure how long, actually. We don't know. I think maybe 22 Brazil. But it doesn't matter." Wolff also praised how good it feels to have both his drivers starting on the front row at their home race. "I think we had such an uphill battle and we are recovering and recovering. And now we've got the front row lockout here in Silverstone, which is a track that is important. And so we've got to see what we can do tomorrow. Certainly the temperature is in our favour. So we'll see tomorrow," he said before revealing the team is not finished making improvements just yet: "We're also bringing more stuff to Budapest and also to Spa."

What has changed at Mercedes?

The team initially had a challenging start to the season, but evidently turned their performance around, with Russell starting on pole in Canada, and then winning in Austria last weekend. Nevertheless, the team boss owes Saturday's success to the weather: "I think we've got the tyres really in the sweet spot today. And we have 14 degrees outside temperature. So it's a British car. Maybe that's why it functions in these conditions. When it's hot, not so much. But also, we've shown a decent pace in Austria. That was never our track. So I think it's just a good trajectory. But improvements are never linear," he revealed. "There were changing conditions all the time, and we were pretty competitive whenever it mattered. The driving was very good," the Austrian concluded.
