Hamilton celebrates emotional victory at British Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton has won the British Grand Prix for a record breaking ninth time. The Mercedes driver, who started second, triumphed after his teammate George Russell retired due to suspected water damage. After the race, Hamilton was emotional as he celebrated another home win, and his first win since 2021.

Hamilton has not won a F1 race since 2021. Nevertheless, on Sunday, he broke the record for the most number of wins at a single circuit, as he took home the top trophy for the ninth time. The Mercedes driver told Jenson Button exactly what it meant to him: "I know it's been since 2021. Every day I get up trying to fight, to train, to put my mind to the task and work as hard as I can with this amazing team."

Did Hamilton expect to win at home?

This season will be Hamilton's last with Mercedes, as he leaves for Ferrari in 2025. "This is my last race here at the British Grand Prix with this team. So I wanted to win this so much for them because I love them. I appreciate them so much. To everyone in this team, everyone at Mercedes, and all of our partners, and then otherwise to all our incredible fans. I could see you lap by lap as I was coming around, and there's just no greater feeling than finishing at the front here."

Having not won since 2021, Hamilton was visibly emotional. "It's so tough I think for anyone, but I think the important thing is just how you continue to get up in this and you're going to continue to dig deep even when you feel like you're at the bottom of the barrel," he said. "There's definitely been days between 2021 and here where I didn't feel like I was good enough or whether I was going to get back to where I am today. But the important thing is that I had great people around me, who continued to support me and my team every time I turned up and seeing them putting in the effort really encouraged me to do the same thing."
