Pierre Gasly himself no longer has to worry about earning a new contract. Over the weekend of the Austrian Grand Prix, it was announced that the Frenchman and Alpine had opted for a longer partnership. However, it is still unclear who will become his teammate. After Esteban Ocon announced his partnership with the team would be coming to an end, there are several drivers eligible for the vacant seat.

Current reserve driver Jack Doohan and Mick Schumacher (driver for Alpine in WEC, ed.) had been on the candidate list for some time. Carlos Sainz has also been added to that list since Flavio Briatore took an important role at the French team as an advisor. From talents to a seasoned, proven GP winner: it could go either way at Alpine.

'Sainz the strongest candidate for Alpine'

In front of GPblog Pierre Gasly was asked which of the three candidates mentioned he would like to see at Alpine next season. "Honestly at the end of the day, I'll be happy no matter what," was his initial answer. "As a competitive person, I want the most competitive out there next to me and to push the team. I think all three are great options."

"Obviously, Carlos has the added value of having a lot of experience in strong teams, McLaren, Ferrari lately. So, obviously he's got slightly more to bring and that'd be obviously the best option. But looking at Jack and Mick, they're both very talented, very fast, they're both already included in the team. They know the guys and I'm sure they'll fit very well," Gasly said.
