Red Bull engineer pick Verstappen's best race: 'where he disappeared'
- Jeroen Immink
Max Verstappen now has 61 victories to his name. As well as his Sunday triumphs, Verstappen has 40 pole positions. Which races were the Dutchman's best victories? Red Bull chief engineer Paul Monaghan lists a few of his favourites.
Verstappen's driving style prompts spectacular races
In the F1 podcast Beyond the Grid, Monaghan discusses Verstappen's driving style. According to the Englishman, the aggressive ruthless style of racing has been a trigger for a lot of spectacular battles from the Dutchman. " He has won races by attacking, but also by defending," Monaghan reveals. "The example of Imola this year is phenomenal. But I'll take you back to Miami in 2023. He went off there or he spun in qualifying. Either way, something went wrong. Then Charles (Leclerc) caused a red flag and Max was in P9 and Checo (Perez) on pole position. And by lap 15, Max was already right behind Checo. Then I thought, 'This is an abnormal way of racing'. He overtook people, paid attention to his tyres and then caught his teammate."
In Belgium 2022, Verstappen was too fast for the rest
In 2022, according to Monaghan, Verstappen showed perhaps his best side. There, the Briton became convinced of Verstappen's pure speed compared to his competitors. "If you look at Spa 22, he was gone, wasn't he? Absolutely gone. And he didn't put a foot wrong. He just doesn't lose concentration," Monaghan said. I refer you to Spain 22 when the DRS wouldn't open reliably. Go and have a listen to that radio. Goodness me. He will offer you an insight into what is going on, regardless of the situation," Monaghan added.
