Norris adamant: 'Not the best, but the most consistent team'
- Jeroen Immink
McLaren is not the best, but the most consistent team. So argues Lando Norris ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix. According to the Briton, there was too much criticism of the Woking-based team after the British Grand Prix.
At the British GP at the Silverstone circuit, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton showed that they were the masters of their own teams by deciding the timing of pit stops. At McLaren, the board radios showed some doubts about the right strategy, leaving Norris no further than P3 behind Hamilton and Verstappen.
Norris does not go along with criticism of McLaren
Norris does not agree with the criticism of McLaren's strategy after the British GP. Indeed, according to the one-time Grand Prix winner, McLaren is the most consistent team. " I think we have definitely been the most consistent team, but I don't think we have absolutely been the best team," Norris revealed. "Maybe I would bet one or two races that we were potentially the best car, but from A to B over a whole weekend. I don't think we had a dominant weekend. I think if you look at other teams, for example in Canada, Mercedes should have been one or two quite easily and they messed up a lot more than we did at Silverstone," Norris added firmly.
Where can McLaren improve in the battle with Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari?
According to many, Norris should have won the race in England, but he himself disagrees. According to him, there are still plenty of things McLaren can improve to win races strucutureally. "I think you still have to look at those other things. And people only looked at the fact that we didn't win. But even if we had got into the lead, we wouldn't have won, I think. So we still have a lot of work to do on certain situations, certain tyres we need to work on. We drive on harder tyres, we are potentially a bit weaker on softer tyres. And on certain high-speed circuits, I think we have drifted a bit from our position as the strongest or one of the strongest."
