The first session at the Hungarian Grand Prix is complete, and it was Carlos Sainz and Ferrari who set the early pace. His 1.18.713 was the fastest around the Hungaroring as Ferrari continue to try out a newly modified floor after it affected their performance at the Spanish Grand Prix. Max Verstappen was +0.276 seconds off the Spaniard in P2, and teammate Charles Leclerc finished in P3.

Ferrari find the pace in incident-free FP1

With Mercedes coming into this weekend off the back of two race wins in a row and Red Bull bringing many upgrades to the Hungaroring, it was Ferrari that was able to set the early pace. Verstappen was the only car that was sent out on the softs in the first half an hour of the session which meant he topped the timing sheets. However, once the rest of the grid went onto the softs, Sainz and Leclerc jumped to the top of the standings. Verstappen was able to split the two Prancing Horses as the chequered flag fell.

It was a very clean FP1, the only yellow flag came out for a bit of debris that came off Alex Albon's Williams which caused a very brief virtual safety car. The performance of the session? The Sauber of Zhou Guanyu. The Chinese driver was able to finish the session in P5 ahead of both McLarens and Lewis Hamilton in a heavily upgraded and impressive Sauber.
