Where can Perez improve according to Waché? 'That's what it looks like...'
- Estéban den Toom
Sergio Perez is a much-discussed man in Formula 1. Red Bull Racing's Mexican is regularly criticised for being too far away from Max Verstappen, his teammate. Pierre Waché, Red Bull's technical director, addressed the situation surrounding 'Checo' during the team bosses' press conference after FP1.
Asked about Perez's performance, and how come he is struggling so much in Formula 1, Waché explained: "If I knew, I would have fixed it. But it's difficult to say. He's part of us for sure and it's what we have to try to help him to extract the potential of the car. I have some feedback from him, and we have some feedback to try to help him. The point is not only reflecting on how he feels in the car. That is something that sometimes is unlucky, is what happens in some quali that could affect the overall result of the race. But I think we are trying to help him to have a better result for the next two races before shutdown."
Waché on Perez's performance and his areas for improvement
So where are Perez's areas for improvement according to Waché? "Does he lack confidence in the car? It's difficult to say. I'm not a driver. But it looks like the car's response is not what he likes. That is something that we have to address on our side," the technical director said.
"For sure, the more you push the car, the trickier it can become. I don't have an exact point where we can identify where the problem is for him compared to Max. But it is clear that stability can be improved for both drivers. I suspect that will help him," Red Bull Racing's key man concluded.
