Jos Verstappen's admits: 'not sure if I was good enough' to win a title
- Corwin Kunst
Jos Verstappen believes he deserves more seasons in Formula 1. Max Verstappen's father never won a race, although he did manage to get on the podium twice. His adventure in the premier class of motorsport should have yielded more prizes, he thinks. Although Jos has now admitted that perhaps he was not good enough to win a world title.
Max Verstappen has been on the podium several times in Hungary, but his father Jos preceded him. In 1994 - exactly 30 years ago - Verstappen sr. grabbed his first Formula 1 podium at the Hungaroring with Benetton from twelfth on the grid. Jos crossed the finish line in third place in Budapest, a feat he equalled later that year in the Belgian Grand Prix.
Jos Verstappen looks back unsatisfied
It was just those two podium finishes in the now 52-year-old Dutchman's F1 career. Those two podium finishes are dwarfed by son Max's 107 top-three finishes. Jos therefore states to De Telegraaf that he didn't manage to get the most out of his career in Formula 1.
"I certainly don't look back on my Formula 1 career with much satisfaction," Verstappen Sr. says. "I think I was in the wrong position at the wrong time. It's all easy talking with hindsight. Now I started at a top team (Benetton, ed.) and that was maybe not ideal. But at the same time, say 'no' to such an opportunity. I'm sure I was good enough for Formula 1. But now I doubt whether I also had enough qualities to become a world champion. Especially when I see Max driving now, I sometimes ask myself if I was good enough." Verstappen concluded.
