Russell riding high after beating Hamilton: 'Want another race next week'
George Russell successfully defended hard against his seven-time World Champion teammate Lewis Hamilton to win the Belgian Grand Prix, but that was just one part of getting the victory. Russell endured an extremely long stint on the hard tyres to make the one-stop work, which he suggested on the radio.
Russell secures his second win of the 2024 Formula 1 season after previously winning in Austria. The Brit was delighted to get the better of his teammate and was riding high, though he admitted his surprise in his first interview.
How did Russell react to winning in Belgium?
"It's an amazing result. We didn't precit this in our strategy meeting. The car was feeling awesome. We made lots of changes. The tyres felt great," Russell reported before confirming he wanted to switch to a one-stop.
"I kept saying we could do the one-stop. The strategy team did a great job. Well done to Lewis because he controlled the race; if circumstances were different, I'm sure he'd have won. One-two is an awesome result for the team. It was a team effort. All the strategy guys did a great job. We rolled the dice but it was only possible because the car was feeling great," Russell said.
Formula 1 now enters the traditional summer break period, but Russell doesn't want to stop. "Three wins in six. I want another race next weekend to be honest. This is feeling so good. The team have worked so hard. Well deserved for everyone at the factories," Russell concluded.
