Mexican media seem to give up on Perez: 'From bad to worse'
- Ludo van Denderen
Sergio Perez is a folk hero in Mexico. Back home, the Red Bull Racing driver cannot walk the streets unchallenged. he is approached for an autograph or a selfie everywhere. But the enthusiasm seems to be waning. After another weekend in Belgium, in which Perez could hardly convince, the sentiment towards the driver is changing.
Thus, Esto - the country's leading sports outlet - headlined in big letters, "Checo Perez, from bad to worse." The medium pointed out that although Max Verstappen's teammate started on the front row of the grid, he ended up crossing the line in eighth place. Perez moved up one place a few hours later as original winner George Russell was disqualified.
The comments then cited that Perez "keeps tumbling" and he dropped back from second to eighth, which was characterised as "a reflection of how his last few races have been. This makes it nine consecutive Grand Prix without a podium finish'. Although Esto did add that Perez was not helped by Red Bull's 'poor strategy'.
'Decision about Perez not yet made'
Reforma newspaper also saw Perez in trouble and told readers about the summit meeting within Red Bull this Monday about the future of their compatriot. It also cited a test this week with Daniel Ricciardo and Liam Lawson, who are vying for Perez's seat. But: "This does not mean that Perez will be replaced or move to Racing Bulls (VCARB, ed.) in August after the summer break," however, is the hopeful message to supporters.
