When Formula 1 heads to Zandvoort in about three weeks' time for the first Grand Prix after the summer break, Sergio Perez will 'just' be there. As is now well known, Red Bull Racing decided early this week to keep the Mexican as Max Verstappen's teammate. Surprising? Yes, partly, as Perez's performance in recent weeks has been nothing to write home about. Although the driver himself made it clear on more than one occasion that he was confident of staying on at Red Bull.

Although his body language often suggested otherwise, Perez said all along he was not worried about his future. Criticism and pressure, Perez was convinced, is part and parcel of coming out for one of the best teams in Formula 1. "When you look at it, there has been other drivers that have had a similar period of bad races but it's not so noticeable," is Perez's conclusion to the likes of GPblog, when looking back on a tough run of form. "I think in Red Bull there is a lot of talk all the time in the media and the scrutiny. It's worse for the Red Bull drivers, definitely."

"But at the same time, I grew up like this. I grew up since my karting days. If I didn't win a race I didn't know if I was going to make the next race. I was pretty up already with a lot of pressure in my career so it's no different. Formula 1 drivers are pretty used to this pressure," said Perez, who is currently on holiday in Mexico.

Rumours about Perez's future keep coming

Once he returns from his homeland and gets back into the RB20, there is a real chance that the rumour mill will start up again. Red Bull Racing's management may have decided at the beginning of the week that Perez could stay on for the rest of the season, but what happens next is uncertain - despite the contract for the Mexican.
