Hamilton doesn't support aircon in F1 cars

From the latest safety features to innovative aerodynamic and mechanical parts, Formula 1 cars are constantly changing as teams push to find the next step. One of the latest changes proposed by the FIA includes adding an aircon into the cockpit of an F1 car. Lewis Hamilton is firmly against this proposed idea and dismissed those who suggested it would be a good idea.

The suggestion was prompted by the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, which was completed in extremely hot and humid conditions. Logan Sargeant had to retire from the Grand Prix because he was feeling unwell, Esteban Ocon was sick inside his helmet, and Lance Stroll claimed he was passing out in the car. The FIA took action after the event.

Should F1 get cooling inside the cockpit?

A device has now been made and is set to be tested at the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix. But Hamilton is firmly against this plan and dismisses any suggestions that it is required. The seven-time World Champion said in Hungary: "It's not needed. This is Formula 1. It's always been like this."

"It's tough in these conditions. And we're highly-paid athletes. You've got to train your ass off to make sure you can withstand the heat, ultimately. It's tough. It's not easy, especially when you go to places like Qatar and Singapore. But I don't think we need an AC unit in the car," Hamilton added.

Incidentally, the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix isn't expected to have the same issues as the event which took place last season. This is because it has been moved back to December. In 2023, it took place two months earlier, when it is usually hotter. This year, it will form the middle leg of a triple header, which closes out the season.
