Verstappen gets support from his former right-hand man: 'That's not fair'
- Sandy van Wijngaarden
After some heated board radios in Budapest, Max Verstappen received an awful lot of criticism. The Dutchman's former mechanic stands up for him and talks about the emotions at play in this intense sport.
Jon and Matt Caller were both previously mechanics on Max Verstappen's car. Now the proportions are slightly different. Jon is the primary mechanic on Verstappen's car and Matt is on Sergio Perez's. Yet both obviously have a lot of experience working with the three-time world champion.
'There is no room for bulls**t with Verstappen'
Talking to De Telegraaf, Matt talks about Verstappen's board radios in Hungary. His former mechanic stood up for Verstappen. ''But be honest: is it fair to judge someone on a few board radios in the heat of the race?'' he said of it.
The mechanic continued that there really shouldn't be a microphone stuck to himself during the race. This would lead to his dismissal, he told himself. He said the heated expressions are because Max demands the utmost of himself and his team. This is nothing personal. ''There is no room for bulls**t with him, that's what makes him so good,'' said Matt Caller.
