Piastri uncovers the details regarding his mystery injury

Oscar Piastri has supplied further details about his (previously) secret rib fracture. During the summer break, Piastri revealed a picture that showcased a broken rib. It turns out he won his first race, the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, whilst driving with the injury. The Australian has explained that he broke it whilst driving in Formula 1, pinning the blame on downforce and an issue with his seat.

In a post on Instagram, Piastri listed a number of things he did for the first time. He mentioned his first Formula 1 rib, but also the fact that he broke a bone for the first time. The McLaren driver adds that his rib was "happy with the summer break".

How did Piastri break his rib?

"Just from driving," was Piastri's simple response to the question when speaking to GPblog and others in the paddock. Piastri then saw a humourous side to the injury. "You could say we put so much downforce on the car, but no, it was just from driving," he added.

"Obviously, at the start of the year, we make the seat, and sometimes you get it a little bit wrong. Some tracks don't expose it. Barcelona, Austria, and Silverstone are three pretty hardcore tracks. It was a bit of a pressure point, which, eventually, my rib gave up. It was at some point in around Austria. It was probably a bit disturbed in Barcelona and Austria afterwards. It was pretty painful and Silverstone was a pretty nasty few days," Piastri explained.

McLaren are pushing hard in multiple areas to see if they can hunt down Red Bull Racing in the Constructors' Championship. This includes work on the strategy side and general performance upgrades, but the staff at Woking perhaps had a surprising task in recent months. "It's all good again now. We've changed the seat and fixed it pretty much immediately. All back to normal," Piastri promised.
