McLaren currently has the fastest car in the F1 field, but the British team is by no means resting on their laurels. For the Dutch Grand Prix, the team has made some adjustments to the cars of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. So Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen have been warned: if all goes according to plan, McLaren will be even faster at Zandvoort.

Lando Norris is pretty clear about the purpose of the updates. "To go quicker," he says dryly to the likes of GPblog. "Nothing more, really, to make the car more grim and to go faster. We've not really had an upgrade since Miami. We've added little things to the car, but nothing which is really, I would say, in our terms, pretty most people's terms be called an upgrade. It's just kind of one in between."

McLaren make 'small steps'

But, Norris argues, they are "small steps forward". "A lot of other teams have done [this] over the last few races, especially our main competitors. I's about time, but I think in a good sense, we've taken our time to try and understand things well. We've seen other teams put things on the car and it not necessarily work and we wanted to make sure we avoided that."

In other words, "So we were patient. I think we paid the price the last couple of races, even though we've had some great races, compared to some of our competitors, with the upgrades that they've been bringing," Norris said.
