Sainz braced for change of results at Williams: 'Help the project'
At the start of the summer break, it was finally announced where he would drive in 2025. Williams will be the Spaniard's new home from the end of this season. This means Sainz will go from winning races and scoring podiums to fighting for the last few points. However, Sainz knows this and reveals why he chose Williams.
'Help the project move forward'
Speaking to GPblog and others in the paddock ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz admitted he knows Williams won't suddenly start fighting for wins and podiums when he joins the team. "I've been in Formula One for ten years. Eight of them, I haven't fought for wins, and two of them, two or three, I have. So I've actually spent more time not fighting for wins than fighting for wins," Sainz said.
"Formula One, for me, is a lot about extracting the maximum out of the car. The result really is, not purely dependent on the athlete and on the driver, it depends on the machinery you drive. And it's all about how am I gonna also help Williams, how I'm gonna help the project move forward. That really motivates me. Something that I feel. I want to feel, listen, I want to feel like I can help."
Sainz currently sits fifth in the drivers standings with one race win from Australia. The three-time Grand Prix winner had to find a new drive for next year after being told he would be replaced by Lewis Hamilton at the start of the season.
"And this, in a team, such a historical team like Williams, that has such a clear vision, and they are super committed to bringing the team back to the front with very clear investment partners. I think it's something that was important for me. And the results are for ‘25, I know they might not be wins or podiums, but I still think we can do a good job."
