Horner: Drivers 'incredibly disciplined' to avoid distraction at Zandvoort
- Ludo van Denderen
The Dutch Grand Prix is a unique event on the F1 calendar. Tens of thousands of fans come along the circuit in the dunes of Zandvoort to enjoy three days of racing and all-round fun. As soon as there is no action on the track, the volume goes up, as party music blares through the circuit speakers. An incredible experience for the fans no doubt, but are the drivers and F1 teams as happy with it?
Christian Horner was a guest on Friday night at an event with TAG Heuer, where also GPblog joined. Horner praised the Dutch fans for their huge support for Max Verstappen. "Yeah it's incredible coming here, the Dutchies really go for it and it's great to see the passion and enthusiasm that there is, Max, obviously his home race. He's the reason that we are here," the Red Bull Racing team boss said.
"The support for him and the team, the noise is quite something and yes, just no matter what the weather I'm sure they'll all be there out there cheering for him and the team tomorrow and Sunday. So that makes it really special," The 50-year-old continued.
'The drivers are incredibly disciplined to avoid distraction'
At no other circuit is there such a party between sessions as at Zandvoort. "Well, the noise from the DJs and the crowd is louder than the engines. So when the drivers are getting ready to get into the car to race, you can't hear anything. They're incredibly disciplined to be able to avoid that distraction. But yeah it's quite an atmosphere." Horner concluded. Red Bull and Verstappen will be hoping to please the Dutch fans this weekend with a record-equalling fourth-race victory at Zandvoort.
