Debate: 'Colapinto is a suitable replacement for Logan Sargeant'
- Sandy van Wijngaarden
Logan Sargeant is to relinquish his seat to Franco Colapinto with immediate effect. The decision to put the F2 driver in the seat at Williams came as a surprise to many. Still, it is not a very crazy decision and the Argentinian seems a good choice. Therefore, GPblog's statement is: 'Colapinto is a suitable replacement for Logan Sargeant'. Logan Sargeant's heavy crash at Zandvoort during the third free practice seems to have been the final straw. On Tuesday evening, it was announced by Williams that he will be sidelined with immediate effect and that Franco Colapinto will become his replacement. That the American could be sidelined during this F1 season had been clear for some time. Several names have been mentioned during this period that could replace him.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli, as a Mercedes junior, seemed a logical replacement earlier in the year. The Italian turned 18 at Zandvoort last weekend, so it would also be the right time. Yet Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff already made it clear after the race at Zandvoort that Antonelli would continue the programme at Mercedes.
Another name that was mentioned a lot was that of Liam Lawson. He belongs only to the Red Bull junior programme. In addition, Helmut Marko recently announced that Lawson will get a seat in F1 in 2025. Finally, there was a lot of talk about Mick Schumacher. He, of course, still serves as Mercedes reserve driver. Yet he has not become Sargeant's replacement. Schumacher is also currently busy with his WEC career.
'Colapinto is a suitable replacement for Logan Sargeant'
Franco Colapinto may well be Logan Sargeant's replacement. The Argentine has been racing with Dutch MP Motorsport in Formula 2 since this season. Added to this was his inclusion in the Williams Racing Driver Academy. Williams has thus opted for a home-grown driver.
This year, Colapinto made his F1 debut during the first free practice at Silverstone. There he finished in eighteenth place, four tenths behind Alexander Albon. In the Formula 2 standings, the Argentine is sixth, 69 points behind the championship leader. So despite having little experience in both F2 and F1, Colapinto did relatively well in both classes.
Therefore, GPblog's statement is: 'Colapinto is a suitable replacement for Logan Sargeant'. Let us know in the poll whether you agree with the statement and leave your opinion in the comments.
