Andrea Kimi Antonelli will make his debut in a Formula One weekend at Monza. The Italian who turned 18 last week will be in action for Mercedes during the first free practice session. Formula One Management CEO Stefano Domenicali is happy that Italy has another high-profile driver.

Antonelli will make his debut in a Formula 1 weekend in his homeland. No Italians currently drive in the top class of motorsport, so it will be extra special for the Italian fans who will be present at the circuit.

Domenicali happy with Antonelli's debut

Domenicali told Italian newspaper La Repubblica: "As Italians we are proud, but the news [that Antonelli will drive in FP1 at Monza] is appreciated by everyone. Kimi is a reference point for a great team like Mercedes. It means he is a champion, he is very talented, and he is a great guy with a wonderful family. Let's not put too much pressure on his shoulders, but finally, an Italian is returning to Formula 1."

Seat for Antonelli in 2025?

Antonio Giovinazzi was the last Italian in Formula 1. Domenicali therefore hopes a new Italian could inspire the next generation: "Kimi is an extra push to make the Italian boy believe. Next year we will have 20 per cent rookies. New blood always does well." With this, the FOM CEO also seems to be hinting at a full-time seat for Antonelli in Formula 1.
