FP1 Report Monza F1 Max Verstappen fastest Kimi Antonelli Italian GP

Verstappen has advantage early in Monza in FP1 as Antonelli has big crash

Max Verstappen was the quickest driver in FP1 of the Italian Grand Prix on Friday. His fastest lap time was a 1:21.676 at the Monza circuit. Charles Leclerc finished in P2, while Verstappen's championship rival, Lando Norris rounded off the Top 3 at the weekend's first session. Moreover, making his debut, Andrea Kimi Antonelli caused a red flag.

For Antonelli, his first session did not go according to plan, as he crashed 10 minutes into the session, causing a red flag. As he result, he also finished the session in P20. Also making his debut as a full-time driver this weekend, Franco Colapinto finished FP1 in P17, as he replaces Logan Sargeant, but he also entered the gravel trap in the same corner where the Mercedes junior driver lost control over his car.

As it happened

The two Red Bulls and the two Mercedes began the session on softs, while the Ferraris and the McLarens opted for mediums early on in FP1. As a result, Antonelli himself led the session during the first eight minutes. 10 minutes in however, the young Italian crashed in the Parabolica corner, ending his first F1 session quickly. Team principal Toto Wolff was quick to talk to the youngster over the team radio, and told him: "All good Kimi!" Then in the pit lane, Wolff continued to talk to the Italian youngster.

After a lenghty red flag period in Monza, the session resumed with 37 minutes to go. At the halfway point of the session, Valtteri Bottas was the quickest on the softs, ahead of the last standing Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton.

On his first flying lap, Sainz also had troubles into Parabolica, however, the experienced driver could avoid entering the gravel trap. Nico Hulkenberg also experienced the same problem later on. Later on, Hamilton also locked up into Turn 4, and had to cut the chicane, while Lance Stroll also caught the gravel trap exiting Lesmo 2. Moreover, Esteban Ocon also spun in Turn 1 during the final moments of the session.

With 12 minutes to go, Bottas was still leading the session, until Leclerc pieced a lap together on soft tyres. The Monegasque driver also reported over the radio that he had trouble decelerating. Following his first flying lap, Norris was the leading McLaren driver, and got up to P2. Minutes later, on the Dutchman's first true flying lap, Max Verstappen could jump the pair by more than two tenths.
