Vasseur lyrical about Leclerc: 'Harder than winning in Monaco'
- Estéban den Toom
Charles Leclerc was the surprise winner of the Italian Grand Prix. The Monegasque's victory caused frenzied joy among the Tifosi, who could finally roar along to the 'Fratelli d'Italia' again after a Formula 1 race. Was it the best race for Leclerc of his career? Ferrari team boss Frederic Vasseur gives his findings.
Vasseur on Leclerc
"I think it's much more difficult to win in this situation than to win in Monaco, for example, when you do the pole position and you lead the race from lap one. Today he had to fight, he had to manage the tyres. It was a difficult one. He had to push tremendously," the French team boss of the Italian Scuderia told reporters after the race, including GPblog.
It was not easy for Leclerc, as he started from the fourth starting spot. "When you win in this condition I think it's much more, I don't know the right word, I know it in French. I’m trying to find the word in French. But I think it's a much better reward for the drivers than to win when you are doing the pole position and fastest laps," Vasseur said.
Leclerc in the World Championship standings
Leclerc made great progress in the Formula 1 drivers' championship with his victory in Monza. Behind Max Verstappen (303 points) and Lando Norris (241 points), Leclerc is on 217 points, so the gap to Norris is only 24 points. McLaren seems to have the better car at the moment, but in Italy, Norris did not get beyond third place. He finished behind teammate Oscar Piastri, who was not instructed by McLaren to leave the Englishman in front.
