Wolff sees positive change in Formula 1: 'Great for the sport'
- Cas van de Kleut
Formula 1 is exciting again. The Red Bull dominance is over and there are more and more teams to fight for podiums and victories. Toto Wolff stated after the Italian Grand Prix to GPblog and others that this is great new for the the sport and Formula 1 itself.
In 2022 and especially in 2023, Red Bull Racing dominated the sport. Max Verstappen became world champion twice during that period, winning no fewer than 35 races in two seasons. At the start of the current season, it seemed that Red Bull had built another dominant car.
Nothing was further from the truth. Verstappen may have won seven of the first 10 races, but the last few race weekends have been very different. Indeed, the last six races were not won. Lewis Hamilton (two wins), George Russell, Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc did manage to win in that period. Moreover, Carlos Sainz has also already won a GP this year, back in Melbourne.
Wolff on the excitement in Formula 1
So it is fair to say that the excitement is back, something the Austrian team principal agrees with, he answered in Monza: "It's great for Formula 1. It’s real rock and roll. If you look at Ferrari, they had some really off weekends, and then came alive in Zandvoort in the race and today with the clever strategy, and they won in Monza. Between these top 4 teams, we see oscillations and I think it's great news great news for the fans, great news for the sport. There are 7 or 8 cars that are capable to race for the podium."
