Newey gives Aston Martin a challenge: 'Red Bull did this extremely well'

10 September at 13:23

Adrian Newey has enjoyed great success with Red Bull Racing, but from 2025, he will be the technical mastermind at Aston Martin F1. Will Newey succeed by taking the Silverstone-based team to the front of the grid? Martin Brundle shares his thoughts.

Designer Newey has won multiple drivers' and constructors' titles at Red Bull after joining the team in 2006. However, after a long career with the Austrian team, the Brit wanted a new challenge after departing Red Bull after the 2024 Miami Grand Prix. He has found that at Aston Martin, with the team currently sitting fifth in the constructors' championship, well behind Mercedes in fourth.

Aston Martin now faces new challenges

Former F1 driver Brundle has had his say on the breaking news, and he foresees problems in Aston Martin's current state. According to him, the team's outcome will depend on how it will deploy Newey: "That's a big challenge for a team. If you've got Adrian Newey on board and you don't win, well, then you've wasted Adrian Newey. If you do win, it's all about Adrian Newey. So it's a problem they have to manage," Brundle states to Sky Sports.

The Brit went on and said that Red Bull were very good at getting the best out of Newey: "Red Bull have been extremely good at using the genius of Adrian and compartmentalising other aspects to make sure that they get the best out of him."

Brundle finished by saying that he believes it will be Newey's last commitment to a big team in the world of F1: "Adrian is 66 years old, on boxing day. He's got this huge amount of success, as we've said. But, I'm sure this is probably his last roll of the dice with a big team, and he'll want it to be a great success."
