Schumacher thinks Aston Martin has 'taken a leap' with Newey
Adrian Newey will work for Aston Martin from next season. The British designer will join from Red Bull Racing, where he will leave after almost two decades with the Austrian team. According to former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll's team has made a jump with this signing.
Schumacher expects a resurgence of Aston Martin
This year, Aston Martin are struggling in Formula 1. Alonso managed several podiums in 2023, but in 2024, they have failed to do so. But Schumacher expects Newey's arrival to provide fresh impetus. "I am very confident, although he might not officially start until next year, that Aston Martin will make a miraculous leap. Next year and otherwise by the end of the year," Schumacher told Sky Sports Germany.
"He is spoilt for success, but he is also known for guaranteeing success and bringing it with him. And of course that has to be his goal. He has everything he needs," the German added. If Max Verstappen becomes world champion this year and Red Bull takes the constructors' title, Newey will bid farewell to Red Bull with no fewer than eight drivers' and seven constructors' titles.
Schumacher believes Aston Martin can go for a title in F1, but everything will have to be right. "Newey has to have certain preconditions to work well. He has to be comfortable and he has to have absolute confidence. At Red Bull, that was no longer the case. He just wants to do motorsport. He wants to have enthusiastic people around him who have no sensitivities, but only one goal: build fast cars and win races," Schumacher said.
