What makes Newey so good? 'Even I don't always have all the answers yet'
- Jeroen Immink
Aston Martin confirmed Adrian Newey will join the team in March 2025. Newey is recognised by all as the best designer in the history of Formula 1, but what makes the Brit so good? In the High Performance Podcast, he explains it himself.
Newey: 'We still don't have all the answers either'
In the podcast, Newey is asked what he sees that other teams do not. The Briton answered at length. " A whole variety of reasons. I think, first of all, it’s trying to put a bit of creativity and lateral thinking into how you go about it and how you go about the research. But it’s also not just blindly believing the tools. But all those tools, including the simulations, aren’t the real thing. They have limitations and inaccuracies which sometimes you’re just not aware of," Newey reveals.
Adding to this, the Brit says that even as an engineer, you will never learn. "When you look at the track data, sometimes it’s difficult to pick things out that the drivers are describing but can be really tricky to see from the data. We don’t have all the answers. We, as engineers, still don’t have all the answers," Newey concluded.
After his successful start at March in Formula 1, Newey was picked up by Williams. He then went to McLaren and switched to Red Bull Racing in 2006. At both Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull, Newey enjoyed huge successes with multiple championships. Top drivers like Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell, Mika Hakkinen, Sebastian Vettel, and Max Verstappen have become world champions with a Newey car.
