Formula 1 Constructors' Championship after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix

The Constructors' Championship after Baku: McLaren overtake Red Bull

15 September at 13:45

Red Bull Racing are not at the top of the Constructors' World Championship for the first time since May 2022, as McLaren scored enough points in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix to take the lead. Oscar Piastri won the race, and Lando Norris beat Max Verstappen in the streets of Baku. Sergio Perez failed to score after a late crash with Ferrari's Carlos Sainz.

With Norris' fourth place and Verstappen's fifth, the McLaren driver cut his gap slightly in the drivers' World Championship. However, that result combined with Oscar Piastri's win meant McLaren took home 38 points from Baku. Meanwhile, Perez's crash at the end of the race cost Red Bull at lot of points in the Formula 1 World Championship.

The Mexican was fighting for the podium places, and perhaps even the race win. But Baku's most successful driver crashed and didn't finish the race. This means McLaren have opened up a 20-point lead.
