Verschoor gives Trident emotional F2 win after terrible news
For Richard Verschoor, it was the third time this season that he was on the top step of the podium, but this time the win really stands. After two disqualifications, now it seems like noone can this one away from the Dutchman. Moreover, it was an emotional win for him and his team Trident.
On the podium, Richard Verschoor was emotional, who closed his eyes at the Dutch national anthem. A statement from Trident clarified why that was the case this Sunday: 'The Dutchman gifts Trident with the first win of the season in what was arguably the worst moment for the Italian team as Luca Salvadori, son of Trident’s chairman Maurizio, passed away after a motorcycle accident in Germany.'
At the press conference after the Formula 2 feature race, Verschoor addressed the situation. ''It was, first of all, a super good race but of course emotional. I think it was in the news already that something happened with the family of the team owner and for the team it was very emotional. Especially for the team manager, it was a bit not so nice this morning. I’m very happy to give them this win and I want to say my condolences to the Maurizio family.''
For Verschoor himself, it has been a season with many ups and downs. The two disqualifications were lowlights, as were the technical problems he suffered in the feature race in Monaco. Three wins taken away from Verschoor, causing a loss of confidence in the team. After qualifying, Verschoor dared to be happy, but after the feature race in Baku, the Dutchman was still cautious.
What will Verschoor do in the F2 break?
''Well, it feels strange at the moment. Of course I'm happy, but with everything that happened, it's difficult to straight away be super happy because the past has shown that anything can happen. I want to wait a little bit with the guys. Once I go back now, I will check if all the things are fine. But to be honest, we did half of the race. Fuel cannot be an issue. Plank cannot be an issue. It should be all fine,'' the Dutchman said.
After the race in Baku, a long break awaits the Formula 2 drivers. While Victor Martins and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the men who went with Verschoor to the podium, have plenty of F1 commitments in the coming weeks, Verschoor is going to enjoy some time off.
''I'm going on a very nice holiday. So I go three weeks to Bali. I'm excited for that. The season has been quite tough, also mentally a lot of things happened. I'm looking forward to doing some weeks without racing. Of course as a driver point of view it would be nice to have a race maybe in between before Abu Dhabi,'' Verschoor concluded. Formula 2 returns to action in Qatar on 30 November, with the season concluding in Abu Dhabi a week later.
