Marko sees the positives of the F1 title battle: 'Lost its charm'
Helmut Marko has downplayed any negative feelings at Red Bull Racing and suggests the team are enjoying the title fight with McLaren and Lando Norris. He suggests winning all the time loses its "appeal and charm".
Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen are having a harder time during the 2024 Formula 1 season. In 2023, they set records and milestones every weekend. The team won 21 out of the 22 races held and Verstappen recorded the most consecutive wins by any driver in the history of the sport. The success continued at the start of 2024, but McLaren and sometimes Ferrari and Mercedes are now regularly fighting with them.
Verstappen has said many times: he prefers to win by tens of seconds. But what does Marko prefer? He admits he is enjoying the fight currently ongoing. "We - like the other teams - want to win every race. But over time, it also loses its appeal and charm. The emotions are then a lot less. We are athletes. We want competitors to be on an equal footing."
McLaren took the lead in the constructors' championship last weekend. That meant Red Bull's streak at the top of the Constructors' Championship had ended. They held that position ever since the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix.
Red Bull made a mistake
McLaren took the lead in the constructors' championship last weekend. That meant Red Bull's streak at the top of the Constructors' Championship had ended. They held that position ever since the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix. Marko believes the Milton Keynes-based team took a wrong turn with the development of the RB20. He also saw this happen to other teams.
"There is such a fine line with this generation of cars that one wrong step can make the car dramatically worse. That's what happened to Ferrari. It happened to Aston Martin - and it happened to us. We can't be happy about that. But fortunately, we have recognised the mistake and are on our way to rectifying it," Marko said in an interview with Bild.
