An 'impressed' Verstappen says fellow driver is 'having a great run'
Max Verstappen said he was "impressed" with Oscar Piastri and his recent performances. Despite being in just his second year in Formula 1, the Australian has two wins to his name in 2024, and his recent run of results has lifted McLaren to the top of the constructors' championship.
Piastri has outpaced and beat his teammate Lando Norris in four of the last five Grands Prix. He has also earned six podium finishes in the last ten races, two of which were race wins in Budapest and Baku.
Earlier in the season, the Australian struggled with tyre preservation and fell foul of the degradation that occurs with Pirelli tyres, leading to poor results in Japan and China this season. However, a major improvement in that regard has lifted his performance to make him one of the most in-form drivers on the grid.
Verstappen full of praise for Piastri
Many drivers have commented on Piastri's form, including Max Verstappen, who said, "Oscar is doing a great job. Being in your second year, you're still learning a lot about Formula 1, and in general, he's doing a fantastic job. Also lately, he's really scoring the points for the team."
The Dutchman continued, "They [McLaren], at the moment, are very strong as a team, so it's now up to us to try and make it a bit more difficult for them generally. But that starts with ourselves. We have to be better and make the car faster. That's what we are working on. But yeah, from Oscar's side, he's having a great, great run now."
