Vasseur casts doubts over FIA ruling: 'Rear wing story is different'
There has been much recent debate over the legality of McLaren's 'flexi-wings' after it was called into question. Although the FIA have declared them as legal, it seems many still have an opinion. On Friday, Ferrari team boss Frederic Vasseur was the latest to share his opinion.
This week, the FIA released a statement to say it had investigated the reports and that McLaren's wings are legal. When asked during Friday's press conference about the declaration, Vasseur said: "I think there is a kind of confusion between what's happened with the front wing and the rear wing. The front wing, we all agree, it could be a grey area because in the TD, the first paragraph of the TD, is saying that you can't design part of the car with the intention of the deformation. Intention is difficult to manage."
What about McLaren's rear wing?
Last weekend, television footage showed a part of McLaren's rear wing flexing upwards on the straight. Despite this, McLaren has passed all the tests. For Vasseur, he is still not entirely convinced by the design: "The rear wing story is completely different because on the article, you also have a maximum deflection, and this is black or white. It's not no grey, no dark grey, no light grey. It's black and black. And for me, it's clear."
