Toto Wolff responds to McLaren's rear wing "game"
Red Bull Racing and Ferrari raised questions about McLaren's rear wing, but Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was not overly concerned. He insists it is a "second priority" for Mercedes as they don't find themselves in the mix at the front of the Formula 1 grid.
The FIA made an intervention on McLaren's flexible rear wing and said that it should be modified. In a response sent to the media, a spokesperson for McLaren said, "Whilst our Baku rear wing complies with the regulations and passes all FIA deflection tests, McLaren have proactively offered to make some minor adjustments to the wing following our conversations with the FIA. We would also expect the FIA to have similar conversations with other teams in relation to the compliance of their rear wings."
Helmut Marko was pleased the FIA intervened and wanted to shift the focus to McLaren's front wings. But Mercedes team boss Wolff doesn't care too much about what's happening with his customer team, McLaren.
How did Wolff react to McLaren's wing?
"We're so [focused on our] own issues to solve them that we didn't have it on the radar. You can say that's naive or not," Wolff told Sky Sports, but did admit he believes he McLaren could've got a sporting advantage from it. "But for sure, in Monza and in Baku, it might have had an effect, especially when you see the close racing in the front. That happened, but we weren't part of this game, so it was a second priority to us," Wolff concluded on the topic.
