This is what Norris needs to become F1 world champion in 2024
- Sandy van Wijngaarden
Max Verstappen currently leads the world championship by 52 points. Lando Norris has six Grands Prix and three sprint races to bridge the gap. During F1's 'so-called' Autumn break, both McLaren and Red Bull will be working hard to ensure their driver comes out on top when the sport returns at the United States Grand Prix weekend.
In the latter part of the season, two triple headers are scheduled. First there are the Grands Prix in Austin, Mexico, Brazil, followed by another gap. Then the season concludes with the Grands Prix in Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi, as the usual season finale. Sprint races are also scheduled in Austin, Brazil and Qatar. So in total, including the three sprint races, there are still 180 points available. This involves winning everything and achieving the fastest laps.
What does Norris need to win the world title in 2024?
So there is still plenty of chance for Norris to overtake Verstappen, but would the McLaren driver win the world title should he win everything and Verstappen always come second? If Norris wins everything then he achieves 180 points and finishes with 459 points. If Verstappen comes second every time he finishes with 460 points.
The Dutchman will then still clinch the world title, thanks in part to Daniel Ricciardo taking Norris' fastest lap in Singapore. Yet this scenario seems very unlikely. After all, Norris has only won three races so far this season.
How the season will unfold remains to be seen. Especially with the long breaks in between, the teams have a lot of time to make adjustments to the car.
