Sainz hoping to leave Ferrari on high: 'win at least one more time'
As six races remain in the 2024 Formula 1 season, Carlos Sainz’s time at Ferrari is also coming to an end. After four years with the Italian team, Sainz saw his Ferrari seat given to Lewis Hamilton and will race in the mid-field for Williams in 2025.
Sainz has been one of seven drivers to achieve a race win in the highly competitive 2024 season. With six races to go, the Spanish driver has been reflecting on his racing this season and his approach to his final months at Ferrari.
Sainz stated that he still has hunger to win a race this year, but shared that his motivation is not solely to have a positive farewell to the Italian team. "The first thing on my list is to try to win at least one more time with Ferrari before I leave. It is something that is on my mind, but not because I am going to leave at the end of the year with Ferrari, but because I always try to win all the races the ones I go to,” Sainz said in an interview with Marca Sport Weekend.
Sainz unsure about victory: 'we have to show progress'
Looking at his chances at a win this season, Sainz does not expect the rest of the season to be easy as he reflects on the team’s form in previous races. “I think we also have to show progress in other types of circuits like Brazil, Austin, Qatar and Abu Dhabi, which are more normal circuits … If we show progress there I think we could have a chance to win. If at those circuits we continue to lag behind like we did in Spa or Hungary, then it means we have a lot of work to do.”
Ferrari currently sit third in the Constructor Standings, only 34 points behing Red Bull and 75 behind McLaren. As this autumn break comes to a close, Sainz will have his next chance at a win in the sprint weekend at Austin beginning on the 18th October.
