F1 form dip Red Bull comes as shock to Gerhard Berger

Berger: 'That can buy Red Bull just enough time to reorganise'

Red Bull Racing are expecting to recover at the upcoming US Grand Prix. Max Verstappen is currently still leading the drivers' championship ahead of Lando Norris, however, the Dutchman cannot afford dropping points. Former driver Gerhard Berger believes that if Verstappen manages to get across the finish line and win his fourt title, the Austrians will have time to reorganise.

At the beginning of the season, Max Verstappen could carry on winning Grand Prix similarly to how he did in 2023. The Dutchman has won seven races, however, he is now winless since the Spanish GP. "I never, ever expected Red Bull to be in the situation they are in now. We started this season with the certainty that it would be boring, with Verstappen's total dominance again and a done deal, but instead the opposite is happening," Berger told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Berger on Newey's departure

Coincidentally, Red Bull began to struggle in 2024 after the Miami GP, when the top designer announced his departure from the Austrians. According to Berger, Adrian Newey leaving left its mark on the team. "Now they have new leaders who have to prove they deserve the succession. In recent months, many engineers have left the team and this is another reason for weakening. If Max manages to win the world championship despite everything, I think Red Bull has enough time to reorganise."

Since then, after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Red Bull have lost their lead to McLaren in the constructors' championship. The gap between the top two teams currently stands at 41 points, with two tripleheaders left on the calendar.
