The new rule from the FIA regarding the 'flexi-wings' has meant that not only McLaren had to make a change to their rear wings. The papaya-coloured team caused some chatter in the paddock after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and they were forced to make some changes to their flexi-wing as a result.

The so-called flexi-wing would allow the rear wing of McLaren's car to open up a bit even without DRS on certain parts of the track, allowing the car to go a lot faster. After investigation by the FIA, they were asked to modify the car after the Grand Prix weekend in Baku.

Multiple F1 teams had to modify rear wing

The governing body then instituted new regulations so that teams could no longer take advantage of this system. At first, it seemed to only concern McLaren who were driving with such a rear wing. However, Nikolas Tombazis, boss of single-seaters at the FIA, announced that several teams had to make adjustments for Austin.

"We issued after Singapore some communication about rear wings, saying what we would consider acceptable or not acceptable," Tombazis said to Autosport. "Two or three teams had to make some small tweaks to adjust to that."
