Fernando Alonso looks ahead to future plans within Formula 1

Alonso reveals future plans: 'I will then base my choice on that'

24 October at 13:10

43-year-old Fernando Alonso will make his 400th Grand Prix weekend appearance at the 2024 Mexican Grand Prix, but the Spanish driver isn't showing any signs of slowing down soon. Alonso will remain on the grid with Aston Martin in 2025 and 2026 at least, and he doesn't rule out extending again. The two-time World Champion has explained how he will decide.

Alonso made his Formula 1 debut in 2001 as a 19-year-old, making him the third youngest F1 driver in the sport's history at the time. Since then, the driver has made 396 starts (out of 399 Grands Prix), winning 32 times and achieving 106 podiums. With two championships under his belt, the Spaniard can reflect on a very successful career in the top class of motorsport.

Will Alonso sign another F1 contract?

Currently, Alonso is attached to the Aston Martin team. The Spaniard signed with the British racing team for the 2023 season and this year extended his contract until 2026. Alonso is determined to make the best decision for both himself and the team: "I will race in 2025 and 2026. Then in 2026, I will see how I feel and how motivated I am. I will discuss it with Lawrence (Stroll) and with Adrian (Newey) eventually about what will be the best for the team," Alonso said.

Alonso is looking forward to working with Newey. Aston Martin's future technical managing partner will move from Red Bull Racing and has already won 12 constructors' and 13 drivers' titles earlier in his career: "We enter this personal adventure of working with a talent like Adrian. I want to experience that behind the wheel. But I am not too scared of working alongside somehow and seeing Aston winning even if I'm not behind the wheel. I will feel if I'm not ready to give something extra behind the wheel to the team. Maybe someone else can do a better job and I'll be honest with that. I won't be disconnected to the team so when we win eventually, I will enjoy it as well," Alonso concluded.
