McLaren lodge right of review for Lando Norris' penalty at the US GP
- Ludo van Denderen
McLaren has appealed against the FIA's decision to hand Lando Norris a time penalty following the incident during the United States Grand Prix. They have invoked their right to review on the five-second time penalty.
With the Right to Review, McLaren want to demonstrate that there is other, new evidence that makes the penalty for Norris - who eventually finished fourth behind Verstappen - unjustified. A hearing on this will occur this Friday via video call at 21:30 UK time (14:30 local time). If the stewards decide that there is new evidence, the incident will be reassessed. In extreme cases, the penalty can be revised.
Red Bull will be present at the hearing on Friday. Then, it will become clear what McLaren's new evidence is. Substantial evidence is essential if the penalty is to be reconsidered.
What happened between Verstappen and Norris?
Norris and Verstappen engaged in a multi-lap battle. On lap 52, Norris actually managed to overtake Verstappen but did so off the track. Verstappen also ran outside the white lines, but because he was ahead at the apex of the corner, the stewards decided to give Norris the five-second penalty. According to McLaren, Verstappen had not intended to make the corner and also went off track, so it was unfair to penalise Norris. The British team thought Verstappen should be penalised because he had pushed Norris off the track. Norris confirmed on Thursday that the Woking-based team continued to disagree.
