Pirelli release statement regarding the FP2 tyre test schedule in Mexico
Another tyre test for the 2025 tyre compounds will take place, this time at the Mexican Grand Prix. Free practice two will be used in its entirety by Pirelli, with teams and drivers "validating the softer compounds" of tyres they will be using next year.
Full statement from Pirelli regarding the FP2 tyre test
For FP2 at the Mexican Grand Prix, the Italian tyre company will be running what is known as an 'in-competition' test. For this test, the practice session which usually lasts 60 minutes will be extended by half an hour, and the teams "will have to follow a specific programme established by the Pirelli engineers." As a result, there will be no opportunity for anyone to collect data for this weekend's racing.
However, Pirelli does say that drivers who are not taking part in FP1, such as Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton, will have half an hour to catch up on data collection, as they will be allowed an extra set of medium tyres to complete that.
Each driver in FP2 will have two additional sets of tyres, with one being "identical to the one available for the weekend [in Mexico]... while the other will be a 2025 prototype option, both in terms of the compound and of construction," Pirelli said.
The Italian tyre company also say what the programme entails for each driver in the 90-minute session: "The plan is for the programme to include a performance run and a long run for each set, with every team running the same number of laps with the same quantity of fuel on board."
