Alarm bells ring for downbeat Perez: 'Really far from the top'
Sergio Perez is not optimistic for the rest of his home F1 race weekend. The Mexican reports that his RB20 is "not feeling great" and predicts he is still far from the front of the grid. Perez got within two-tenths of his teammate Max Verstappen in FP1 but still finished six places behind and over one second down on George Russell's fastest time.
Verstappen expressed how he couldn't get a good read on his car because he didn't complete many laps in Mexico. But Perez has a more definite reading on the situation.
Perez downbeat after the first day in Mexico
“It is not feeling great, we have a few issues with the ride in the low speed. We still have some work to do. We are still really far from the top. The crowd is amazing here and I wish we were a little bit more competitive for them, but that is not the case unfortunately," Perez said but is holding out hope for a turnaround on Saturday.
"You never know, tomorrow [Saturday] with the track changing anything can really happen. I hope for qualifying we are able to extract more from the car and give them [Mexican fans] something to really cheer about," Perez said.
Red Bull Racing will hope to make improvements overnight. They face strong competition from McLaren in the Constructors' World Championship and must close a 40-point gap to continue their run as champions. Meanwhile, Ferrari is applying pressure from P3 in the Championship.
